You have that 100% wrong. Wealthy Viennese families were complaining that their adolescent daughters were making up stories about being molested by their fathers and uncles. Freud built an entire field around this idea of the id and subconscious desires rather than believe in child abuse. Let’s be fair though. There wasn’t a body of data to work from, the science side of it was essentially in its infancy, and you do have to start somewhere.
For all the flaws in his conclusions, he did do a marvelous thing in the awareness of mental health being addressable in a more gentle way
Freud was great, because he was so infuriatingly wrong that the collective drive to disprove him kickstarted psychology /j
